Growing up, I was very lucky that my mother was a seamstress and made a lot of my clothes. I didn’t realize how privileged I was then as I would just tell her what I wanted and she’d design and sew if for me on her gigantic desk style SINGER sewing machine.
I remember being scared of that ‘monster’ that made me clothes because I was never allowed to touch it. The ‘monster’ was super loud and scary looking with the needles that went up and down. One day I poked my finger as I tried to play with it when Mom wasn’t home. Traumatized from the blood and pain that surely came, the sewing machine stayed forever in my mind as the ‘monster’ throughout my childhood years . As I got older and became obsessed with clothing, I realized that the monster, hence the sewing machine, was one of the greatest inventions to grace our mankind.
Believe it or not, the sewing machine actually has its own day of recognition! Sewing Machine Day is coming up on Saturday, June 13, 2015! Who knew? The sewing machine was invented in 1790 by an English carpenter named Thomas Saint. The reason he invented the sewing machine is because it took many days to create one piece even while having two or more workers sewing together on the same garment!
Thomas Saint was definitely a saint for his invention! Could you imagine what our lives would be like if he hadn’t invented the sewing machine? We wouldn’t have the clothes that we have today nor the designers! No Prada, no Dolce, no Chanel, no nothing! Clothes would be super expensive without the sewing machine because it would take too many people to sew one piece!
Thank you to Thomas Saint for his incredible contribution to society! As you can see, the sewing machine has come a long way from size and looks, but, it still does what it was created to do, and, luckily for us, we get to look fresh because of the sewing machine!
On Sewing Machine Day, I plan to actually learn how to use a sewing machine! I never learned how to in school, but, better late than never! How will you celebrate?
